Christmas Questions. (2)

What’s Christmas? Why do we celebrate it? What is x-mas all about? Have you ever asked these questions about Christmas before? I used to ask some of them when I was little, and I still do! Here are some questions and answers about Christmas.

What is the true meaning of Christmas? The true meaning of Christmas is pretty simple — Jesus. Jesus is the reason for the season.  It tells us here in Luke 1:26-56 about how the angel Gabriel came to a virgin girl named Mary and told her she was gonna have a baby. But, not just any baby she was gonna have Jesus. In Luke 2:1-40 it talks about how they had to travel to Bethlehem to pay taxes and how there was no room at any of the inns. So, Jesus had to be born in a stable.m That’s the Christmas story in a nutshell. It’s amazing to think about it.  Just read Luke 1:26-56 and Luke 2:1-40 and you have read the Christmas story. (A post is coming soon with more details on the subject)

Have you ever wondered why we celebrate Jesus’ birthday on Christmas?  Historians have studied when Jesus might have been born.  They have a few ideas but, they are not exactly sure when he was born. Christmas was finally declared a national holiday by the United States president, Ulysses S. Grant. It really doesn’t matter when Jesus was born. All that matters is that he was born.

Why do we call it Christmas? Back in the early church time people used to get together for communion or celebrate Christs birthday. They would call these get together’s masses. So, when they celebrated Christs birthday they called it Christs’ mass. Over the years we have shortened Christs’ mass to Christmas!

If Christmas is about Jesus, and not about the presents, is it still okay to get them? Sure it is still okay to buy presents because the presents remind us that God gave us the best gift of all – Jesus!

What’s with the christmas tree? A Christmas tree reminds us of along time ago there were people that worshiped another God not Jesus ,but a false God. They believed that the God dwelled in this big tree in the middle of nowhere, and if anyone cut it down they would be punished. But, there was this one guy who believed in Jesus and decided to cut down the tree. The people watched as the tree came down and nothing happened. Then they all started worshiping the one true God – Jesus! So the tree reminds us that Jesus is the one true God!

X-mas what is that? A lot of you may have heard about the word x-mas before. It is Christmas shortened, but notice that the x covers Christ. So what do you think the purpose of the word x-mas is? To take Christ out of Christmas. I was explaining to my little brother that x-mas takes Christ out of Christmas. Just like Happy Holidays. People say Happy Holidays to take Christ out of Christmas as well. If you know that Jesus is the reason for the season (aka: the reason we celebrate Christmas) then why not start saying Merry Christmas instead of Merry X-mas or Happy Holidays?

Merry Christmas every one!
